Chapter 15

After I went over the full story of our battle against the Ancient Dragons, Gloriana agreed wholeheartedly with the plan to emigrate to earth.

Her workers decided to stay behind to ensure the legacy of her cooking remained, but she was more than happy for that arrangement to continue once I informed her we had a method to travel back to her world in the future if she ever wanted to visit. Better yet, our transfer rings could create a link to any world we had visited, so we wouldn’t even need to let the Empire know of our little trips.

But I still needed to speak to the Emperor before we returned home. It would be possible for Faerina and me to vanish without a trace, but our disappearance would be difficult to explain to the Hero Association.

No, it was better to go with the flow, at least until we weren’t officially ‘on the job’ anymore.

A visit from the Emperor didn’t happen within the hour. Usually, it didn’t happen overnight, but Zandorai’s report had caused his father to ditch the usual schedule completely as he set out from the city. We would see him the moment he arrived, which left one more night to explore the wonders of a strange world.

Gloriana would meet us at the mansion before the transfer, so I took the chance to spend some quality time with Faerina. The markets had reopened, and Zandorai forced even more coins into our hands, likely in a vain attempt to show off the Empire’s good side.

But there was no way I would ignore the lie which had brought us to their world.

So we left the Imperial Prince with a promise that we would speak to the Emperor and wandered out into the city once more. Faerina bought a variety of dresses and shiny trinkets, while I picked up the odd thing that caught my eye. Not much would be useful, but some baubles to remember our time would be nice in the future.

As the day drew to a close, I led the Princess back to another person I had marked down as a potential asset, the Blacksmith Odin.

“Welcome to our store! Please, browse our wares at your leisure!” A fresh-faced young man perked up as he saw us wander into the store. The apprentice, from what I could tell.

He proudly showed off his creations as he extolled the virtues of the blades and armor arrayed along the walls. Though it was fun to play along with his marketing spiel for a while, eventually I cut the kid off and informed him we were there to see his boss.

Disappointed though he was, the apprentice didn’t argue as he dashed into the back room. An irritable discussion echoed out for a moment before the grizzled old man we had met not so long ago stomped back into the open.
